Last week a jury in California awarded a multi-million dollar settlement to Alan Casillas who lost his leg due to the negligence of a truck driver. It has become a large profile case because it may be one of the largest amputation verdicts in California.
The incident in question occurred two years ago while Casillas was riding his bicycle down a street and then came to a stop. The operator of the 53-foot trailer truck was driving down the same street and attempted to turn, but he didn’t adequately check to see if he had enough room to make the turn. While turning, the trailer careened over the sidewalk and knocked Casillas off his bike and onto the ground. That is when one of the wheels of the trailer ran over and crushed his left leg, which had to be amputated.
Casillas suffered severe injuries across his body and was in the hospital for over 50 days following the accident. He now wears a prosthetic leg. Though the defendant alleged that the Casillas was equally negligent because he wasn’t paying enough attention to get out of the way, the jury ruled in favor of the plaintiff in a historic California personal injury case.
Have You Been Involved in a Car Accident?
If you were hit by a car while riding your bike, you may be entitled to compensation. If you suffered any serious injuries and had to seek treatment, you should get in contact with a Nevada personal injury lawyer right away. Those commuting on bikes are at the mercy of passing automobiles, and you deserve compensation if a driver did not exercise reasonable caution when passing you or turning in front of you.
Likewise, if you recently were involved in an accident involving a semi-truck, you should immediately consult with a personal injury attorney. These trucks and their large trailers are incredibly dangerous for other motorists. If the driver was unsafe and caused you property damage and personal injury, you deserve adequate compensation.
