Compared to the sometimes wild roads of Las Vegas, you may think you’re far better off just taking the sidewalk. In most cities, this would definitely be a safe bet. Unfortunately, in Clark County, pedestrians are still in danger from drivers even when they’re not on the roads.
Las Vegas Is Worse than Manhattan
As the Las Vegas Sun pointed out last year, Las Vegas is actually worse than Manhattan in terms of pedestrian deaths. This, despite the fact that Manhattan has a million more people than Vegas.
Just how bad is the problem? Last year, a pedestrian died every six days in Las Vegas Valley. Dozens more were hit by drivers and suffered critical injuries in the process. In 2012, which is the last year national statistics for this are available, pedestrian fatalities occurred at a higher rate in Clark County than those counties that include cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Phoenix, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago and, of course, Manhattan.
Another big problem with these numbers is that they lack any one trend that really stands out. The 60 people who died last year were killed in crosswalks, as well as in open lanes of traffic. Vehicles ranged in size from small cars to large buses. These accidents happened at all hours, as well.
Sadly, the only trend is that pedestrian deaths continue to increase. If the last two years are anything to go by, 2015 will show more of the same. Even though law enforcement and community leaders have made pedestrian deaths a target of their efforts since 2011, the numbers continue to be high.
What to Do if You Become a Victim
There are a couple of things you can do to keep yourself safe as a pedestrian in Las Vegas. Always pay attention to what’s going on around you, for one. You can’t depend on drivers to do this for you. Also, resist the temptation to jaywalk. Many roads in Las Vegas go quite a ways before a crosswalk is available. Still, if you decide to cross where you’re not supposed to, you put yourself at greater risk.
Should you find yourself injured because of a driver, obviously see to your health and speak to the authorities first. However, then you want to call us at Bighorn Law. Now is not the time to take your chances with a lawyer who fancies themselves as a jack-of-all-trades. You need specialists like the attorneys at our firm.
Don’t wait too long to call, either. Every second that passes, it becomes more difficult to retrieve essential evidence for making your case. If the driver is also retaining a legal team, this evidence is even more critical. Of course, this is especially true if the other party has ideas about blaming the whole thing on you.
Just because it’s dangerous to be a pedestrian in Las Vegas doesn’t mean you have to be a victim. However, if you end up hurt because of a driver, our personal injury attorneys will help to bring you justice. Call us today at 702-333-1111 and let us know how we can help.
