Several versions of benefits are available for individuals who are unable to work in the state of Nevada. One benefit, known as Supplemental Security Income (SSI), is a federal benefit program that exists for people that have very limited income and do not have the work history to qualify for more traditional social security disability benefits.
Do I Qualify for SSI in Nevada?
Often, individuals who qualify for SSI are 65 years of age or older. But, the benefit is open to people of all ages, including children who may be blind or have other disabilities. In addition to limited or no income history, you are not allowed to have assets of great value to qualify for SSI. The value of the items that you own needs to be less than $2,000 for someone who is single and less than $3,000 for a married couple.
In Nevada, the assets limit does not typically count the home that someone lives in or the vehicle that they drive. Other forms of assets may also not be counted against the total, but this often goes on a case-by-case basis.
Do I Qualify for SSI and Other Services?
If someone is currently receiving SSI payments, they may be able to also receive other forms of assistance. For example, it is typically allowed to receive medical assistance, such as Medicaid if you are receiving SSI. You may apply for Medicaid after receiving the benefits.
In addition, individuals receiving Medicaid may also qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This program was formerly referred to as food stamps. And while it is possible to receive SSI and SNAP, it is not the job of the Social Security Administration to assist you with a SNAP application or approve you for SNAP.
There is a large list of other services that the state of Nevada allows SSI recipients to qualify for as well. They may include:
- Child care
- Counseling
- Health services
- Rehabilitation
- Transportation
For the full list of qualified services, see the SSA list.
How Much Are Monthly SSI Payments?
For 2021, the payments that one can receive for SSI on a monthly basis range from $553.61 to $2,072 depending on age, living arrangements, and whether the person is blind or not.
